Green Lantern was the original black or white?

My mother, my father and my uncle have all said that Green Lantern was originally black. And I have seen many pictures with him being African American. Then I went to school, and I saw a Green Paper Lantern. But the Green Lantern was white with blond hair. I looked up pictures of him again and he has shown himself to be white. Im really confused now. Is Green Lantern white or black?
